Topic of the Week!
You have an opportunity to control your own thyroid levels and metabolism for life just because you’re learning to manage your Graves Disease/Hyperthyroidism properly with The Thyroid Keeper’s Protocol.
People without thyroid disease will never learn that their thyroid levels and metabolism could be better and can be made optimal not just “in normal range” with simply learning a few skills. Because we have Graves and hyperthyroidism and we choose to keep our thyroids we have learned to control and manage these levels thus becoming the experts our doctors should aspire to be.
How you ask? It is simple biology. Your thyroid controls your metabolism. Your thyroid uses iodine to make hormone. When Graves is active (not in remission) we use a combination of anti thyroid meds and a low iodine diet to force our thyroid levels into optimal (not just normal) ranges. Once Graves is in full antibody remission (not just euthyroid levels) we can still control our thyroid levels through the amount of iodine in our diet. This is a valuable skill!
But, there’s always a but… it’s tricky… very tricky! We are NEVER allowed the 150mcg RDA for non-Gravesters. Too much iodine can raise antibodies as well as thyroid levels. I’ll repeat, too much iodine can raise antibodies as well as thyroid levels. NEVER, never, never try to treat your Graves with high doses of iodine. Those that recommend doing so are ignoring the simple biology of our Graves bodies or are uneducated on Graves physiology. I see endos, GPs, functional med docs and naturopaths doing this all the time. It is WRONG! And it’s dangerous! Not only can too much iodine raise antibodies it can cause heart attacks, strokes, thyroid storms, comas and even death.
So, how much iodine is the correct amount? That’s the Million Dollar question. The answer is it varies for everyone. At times throughout your path to remission it will be different. When you’re on anti thyroid meds it will be different. When you’re in full antibody remission it will be different. In my 9 years of full antibody remission and off meds, my iodine intake needs have gone from the most we’re allowed to almost none and back numerous times. Knowing this is also vital to staying in full antibody remission long term.
Unfortunately, I can’t teach this in the group setting since it does vary so much from person to person and time to time. The only constant I can teach here is we’re never allowed the recommended daily allowance of 150mcg a day. It will always be less but how much less completely depends on your needs at the time.
You have much to learn so please read, read, read on this group. When you’re ready for one-on-one help, please schedule a 1 hour private consultation with me so I can look at your labs and history then tell you how much iodine and/or med dose you need.
Simply go to my website and fill out the Legal Consent Form. Then select 1 Hour Consultation and follow the prompts. We’ll set up your appointment and communicate with each other via Facebook Messenger. ThyroidKeepers.com
The GOOD news is once you learn to control your thyroid levels and metabolism properly, weight management, either weight loss or gain are a cinch!! Ok, maybe not a cinch for weight loss… we still have to resist the temptation of sweets and lovely fried things!!
