Summer Advisories
Heat intolerance is Real! Even with optimal thyroid levels and good stable maintenance many of us still struggle with the summer heat. This is very real and cannot be ignored. Heat stroke can be very dangerous acutely and can have long term adverse effects as well.
Stay well hydrated and have an escape plan to either air conditioning or bodies of water when planning outdoor activities. Your body can’t cool itself properly and you must be prepared to intervene quickly.
If you’re sweating profusely take action to cool yourself. If it’s to the point you’re nauseous and have a headache, it’s gone too far. Submerge in water or get into air conditioning immediately! If you let it get to the point you pass out an ambulance and emergency room visit are warranted. Heat stroke can cause irreversible brain damage. I’m not fear-mongering… this is a fact!
Methimazole (MMI), Carbimazole (CBZ), Tapazole (TPZ) cause sun sensitivity. Meaning you will sunburn more easily than if you weren’t taking it. Use sunscreen. Always. I’m olive complected and rarely burn but I sure did while on MMI.
Dearest Australian and New Zealanders, keep this in mind when your summer returns. I’m sorry, I never remember to post this warning until I’m a hot sweaty mess myself.
